ABOUT
WHAT IS ALEXANDER IN THE WILD?
ALEXANDER IN THE WILD IS AN OUTDOOR STORYTELLING PROJECT ABOUT PEOPLE, PLACES, GEAR AND GETTING STARTED, SEEN THROUGH A DESIGNER’S EYE, A BIGGER-BODIED PERSPECTIVE AND A CURIOSITY FOR WHERE THE WILD TAKES YOU.
THE PURPOSE
Alexander in the Wild is an outdoor, travel, and design storytelling project built around curiosity, real-world experience and the idea that going farther starts wherever you are.
It’s a place for stories about people and places, practical guides for getting started, gear tested through actual use, and a bigger-bodied perspective on fit, access and the outdoors.
I bring a designer’s eye to the things I use, a storyteller’s curiosity to the places I go, and a willingness to keep learning along the way. Sometimes that means backpacking, paddling or traveling somewhere new. Sometimes it means talking to someone who knows more than I do, testing a product, or figuring out how to do something for the first time.
It isn’t about being the most extreme person outside. It’s about getting in the wild, staying curious and seeing where it takes you.
WHO IS ALEXANDER?
ALEXANDER KWAPIS IS A DESIGNER, STORYTELLER AND BIGGER-BODIED ADVENTURER EXPLORING PLACES, TESTING GEAR, MEETING PEOPLE AND LEARNING HOW TO GO FARTHER IN THE WILD.
ALEXANDER’S BACKGROUND
I’m a designer by training and a wildly curious person by nature.
For nearly two decades, my professional life has moved across graphic and product design, research, innovation, engineering and development, sustainability, regulatory, and product marketing. I’ve taken ideas from early sketches and prototypes through testing, manufacturing, launch, and actual use. Along the way, I’ve co-founded and co-owned a design studio and an outdoor brand, experiences that taught me as much about building ideas and telling stories as they did about making products.
My work has also extended beyond the product itself. I’ve directed and managed photo shoots, created content, helped shape social strategies, developed product marketing campaigns, written for publications, and spoken about design, innovation, and sustainability through podcasts, webinars, panels, and other media. A common thread through all of it has been figuring out how to make complicated ideas understandable, useful, and worth paying attention to.
Getting out in the wild has been part of my life for just as long.
I grew up camping and exploring. I earned my PADI certification at sixteen, sailed the waters around Key West, led backpacking trips through the rugged terrain of Isle Royale National Park, and paddled the Boundary Waters. Before I was eighteen, I had become an Eagle Scout, earned the Vigil Honor in the Order of the Arrow, and trained as a Leave No Trace Trainer.
I never really stopped going.
Since then, the definition of adventure has kept expanding: hiking and backpacking, paddling and road trips, national parks and unfamiliar cities, international travel and places close to home that I somehow hadn't noticed before.
Those experiences influence how I see the world. I’m as interested in how a backpack was designed as I am in where I carried it. I notice the details of a place, the people who know it well, the gear that works, the things that don't, and the small moments that somehow become the part of a trip you remember.
That combination of design, storytelling, curiosity, and time outside is what I bring to Alexander in the Wild.
